Well, I’m back. I finished my trek across Switzerland on my brother-in-law’s mountain bike (merci, Max!), and it was a little harder than I expected. The daily distances were manageable—between 40 and 60 miles a day—even on a mix of gravel and single-track. It was the climbs that got me. While there were lots of long, gently rising climbs with a gradient of 5%, there were also lots of short (and not-too-short) walls with a gradient of 20% or more. Those were a chore with a 25-pound backpack (which also took a toll on my backside). Sometimes I felt like I was hardly moving at all! But the weather was fantastic; the views, stunning; and the company and people I met along the way, of excellent quality.
